About the Position
Position # 2667
OrganizationCanadian Red Cross
Position Emergency Management Volunteer - Emergency Management
Impact Statement Volunteers make up more than 70% of the Canadian Red Cross. Whether you want to learn a new skill, meet new people, experience something meaningful, or simply help where help is needed, volunteer opportunities at the Canadian Red Cross are as diverse as people who fill them.

In an average year, we help more than 130,000 Canadians. Globally, we reach more than 6 million people. The number of people who need our help is big and growing. Our mission is simple: to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found.

And to do that in communities across Canada, we need your help.
Description Emergency Management Teams across Canada are looking for volunteers to be a part of their mission. Because of our wide-reaching network of highly trained volunteers, Canadians who have found themselves impacted by disaster big and small, are able to turn to the Canadian Red Cross for relief and support.

Some Emergency Management (EM) Volunteers will specialize in supporting the Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA) program, responding locally to help families who've experienced a disaster at home like a house fire. Some EM Volunteers will specialize in supporting the Emergency Response Team (ERT) which stand up larger operations, as required by community partners like a shelter or a warming centre. Some EM volunteers will do both!

Note: Priority need outside of HRM, however if motivated and committed to the training and availability requirements, applicants are welcome from across NS.
Training Details Initial and ongoing training is required.

Before applying, most interested community members are asked to participate in an information session, offered regularly, and accessed via the application link below.

In the first 6 months, anticipate approximately 15 hours of primarily virtual, modular training requirements.

Shadowing experienced responders is normal and mentorship is frequent.

Regular team meetings are held (often monthly) to optimize skills, communicate process updates, and learn from peers.
Working Conditions Minimum volunteer hours /period:
Ideally you have the ability to volunteer during regular hours and/or during non-traditional hours (evenings and weekends), accept an on-call shift rotation and/or respond to unplanned emergency/disaster related requests periodically. Hours will vary by location and frequency of response activity, but it is good to anticipate 4-5 hours/month plus response.

The potential exists for responding in disaster areas, as well as difficult conditions. If working at a response site, health and safety considerations will be outlined prior to the assignment

You can identify a preference to respond in your local community, outside of your community and/or virtually.

In exceptional circumstances, our volunteers may be offered the opportunity to deploy away from home to a large-scale response in their province or in Canada, as required and available. If deploying, the minimum expectation is typically 14-21 days.
